LIST: Tips to creep and crawl safely on Halloween

HONOLULU (KHON2) — As keiki get ready to trick-or-treat and show off their costumes on Halloween, the scariest thing you can do is not practice pedestrian safety.

HPD wants to remind everyone of important pedestrian safety tips so you and your keiki have nothing to fear this year.

“By following these tips, we can all make our roads safer together,” said Major Brandon Nakasato.

1. Stay Visible

Incorporating bright or reflective elements into your clothing can help drivers see you at night.

2. Walk on the sidewalk

Walking on the sidewalk whenever possible is a great way to keep you out of harm’s way. If there are no sidewalks, make sure you walk facing towards traffic as far to the side as possible.

3. Keep to the Crosswalks

Crosswalks are important for keeping pedestrians safe when crossing busy roads. Walking within the marked crosswalk creates a designated safe space to make sure you get where you are going safely.

4. Stay Alert

Look both ways before crossing the street is one of the golden rules of pedestrian safety for a reason: it allows you to see and be seen by drivers. Another important tip is to keep your head out of your phone and onto the road. These actions combined ensure you are walking distraction-free and can see anything coming your way.

5. Don’t Be Afraid to Shine

Carrying a flashlight, glowstick, or other light source can not only help illuminate your path but also keep you more visible to drivers.

These rules apply to more than just Halloween night; you can practice these helpful habits all year round.
