Man, 66, arrested in connection to Waikiki bank robbery

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 66-year-old man has been arrested in connection to the attempted robbery and use of noxious substance case at a Waikiki bank.

According to the Honolulu Police Department, the man turned himself in at the Kapolei Federal Building, where officers made the arrest.

The initial incident happened on Monday, Sept. 29 after the man entered the First Hawaiian Bank Waikiki branch and demanded money from the bank teller.

When the teller handed over the incorrect amount of currency, the man became “agitated and walked toward the exit.”

Before he left, he sprayed an unknown substance, later identified as oleoresin capsicum spray (OC-spray), inside the bank before fleeing the scene.

As a result, 18 people were treated by Honolulu Emergency Medical Services and the Honolulu Fire Department after they reported burning eyes and sore throats.

All patients were reported to be in stable condition.

HPD said the CID Robbery Detail will continue the investigation.
