HONOLULU (KHON2) — An Oahu grand jury has indicted 44-year-old Gibran Copeland for second-degree murder in the death of 50-year-old Christina Baca.
Baca’s body was discovered in a storm drain in Manoa on September 13, 2024.
Authorities allege that Copeland shot Baca multiple times in the head, torso, and limbs.
The indictment follows reports of a previous intimate relationship between Copeland and Baca, which included instances of domestic abuse.
“This tragic case highlights the urgent need to address domestic violence in our community,” said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm. “These acts of violence have no place in Hawaii, and we are committed to securing a conviction in this case.”
Second-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence with the possibility of parole.
Additionally, as a multiple offender, Copeland may face extended sentencing, which could result in life without parole.
He is currently being held without bail at the Oahu Community Correctional Center and is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The case will be prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dwane Tegman.
