Man suspected of setting Kunia fire charged with arson

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The 70-year-old man suspected of igniting at least one of the eight Kunia brush fires throughout August has been charged with Arson in the Second Degree, the Honolulu Police Department said.

Antonio Vierra had a warrant for his arrest on Aug. 27 shortly before 9 a.m. after authorities found him at North Kukui Street and Nuʻuanu Avenue.

Officials say two fires, one on Aug. 19 and another on Aug. 23, were classified as incendiary, or intentionally set.

Following this discovery, authorities launched an arson investigation, where they found Vierra’s truck near the scene of one of the fires, which witnesses had identified as belonging to the suspect.

Vierra was originally arrested on Aug. 23, but was released pending investigation two days later, HPD said.
