MAUI, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Holomua fire burning in Paia is approximately 50% contained, according to the County of Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety.
The brushfire initially sparked on Sept. 23 shortly before 1:30 p.m. along Holomua Road and Baldwin Avenue.
Initially, hundreds of homes were threatened and more than 1,670 people had to evacuate, with evacuation orders later being lifted on the evening of Sept. 23.
The brushfire has remained blazing through the night into Sept. 24, with the most recent update saying the fire is 50% contained and did not show any forward progress overnight.
Throughout its blaze, the fire has burned approximately 380 acres.
The Maui Fire Department has firefighters on the scene who are monitoring the perimeter and addressing any flare ups or hot spots. MFD said they will work throughout the day to extinguish the fire.
Portions of the surrounding roads are closed to traffic, but there is no direct threat to structures or nearby areas.
