Maui man dies following crash on North Kihei Road

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A man has died following a multiple-vehicle crash on Maui.

The incident happened on Tuesday, May 20, at around 7:30 p.m. on North Kihei Road.

According to the Maui Police Department, a 58-year-old male in a Honda sedan was driving west when he crossed the double solid yellow lines and hit a 54-year-old man driving a Nissan truck.

MPD added that the Nissan was struck in the “left rear quarter panel.”

Following the initial crash, the 58-year-old man continued driving in the eastbound lane when he crashed head-on with a 53-year-old man driving a Toyota sedan.

As a result of the crash, the 58-year-old sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.

Officials said he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and the airbags did not deploy.

MPD also added the drivers of the Toyota and Nissan were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and their airbags did deploy.

The 54-year-old male and the 53-year-old male were both taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

This is Maui County’s 11th traffic fatality for 2025, compared to five around the same time last year.

The investigation is still ongoing.
