HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Maui Police Department is teaming up with state and local partners for a gun buyback event aimed at getting unwanted firearms off the streets, no questions asked.
The event will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Maui County Service Center, located at 110 Alaihi Street in Kahului.
The initiative offers a safe and anonymous way for residents to turn in firearms without having to show ID or explain where the weapons came from.
Participants can stay in their vehicles throughout the process. Firearms must be unloaded and secured in a box or container in the trunk, where law enforcement officers will collect them.
The department is offering $100 gift cards for each handgun, rifle, shotgun, bump stock, or Glock switch turned in. More dangerous firearms including automatic weapons, semi-automatic assault-style rifles, and ghost guns will earn a $200 gift card. However, there’s a cap of three gift cards per person, regardless of how many firearms are surrendered.
There are a few ground rules:
- Ammunition will not be accepted.
- Licensed gun dealers and current or former law enforcement officers aren’t eligible to participate.
- Officers at the scene have discretion to reject firearms or withhold gift cards.
Free gun locks will also be handed out while supplies last.
