HONOLULU (KHON2) — Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi officially proclaimed Oct. 5 through Oct. 11 “Fire Prevention Week” throughout the county, with this year’s campaign looking to educate on lithium-ion battery safety.
The “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in your home” campaign encourages the public to buy, charge and recycle their batteries safely.
Mishandled batteries can potentially be the source of fires, which can be prevented with proper usage and care.
“A single spark can change everything. Consequently, safety with lithium-ion batteries isn’t optional, it’s essential,” Blangiardi said. “Let’s remember to handle with care and charge responsibly.”
Honolulu Fire Department Chief Kalani Hao said that he hopes that the proclamation and awareness week increases community awareness.
“The mayor’s annual Fire Prevention Week proclamation serves as a good reminder for all of us that fire safety is a responsibility that we all share, and by working together we can help make our community safer,” Hao said.
In observation of the awareness week, Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Center will be lit red from Oct. 5 to Oct. 11.
Fire Prevention Week is observed annually during the week of Oct. 9 throughout Hawaiʻi and the continent, in memoriam of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
