HONOLULU (KHON2) — State officials are searching for anyone with information on an illegal nēnē killing that happened in early July.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it received a call on July 8. The caller reported that a federally listed threatened nēnē was found dead near the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauaʻi.
Officials said the nēnē, which are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, was “allegedly shot with possibly a pellet gun or a .22 rifle/pistol.”
State officials are now looking for information that leads to the punishment of the individual(s) involved. In turn, the agency is offering a $5,000 reward.
