HONOLULU (KHON2) — A trial will not proceed for Rogelio Canilao, the man accused of fatally beating his wife two years ago, after a panel of doctors deemed him mentally unfit to stand trial.
The incident in question occurred in October 2022 when officers discovered Canilao’s wife beaten to death.
Court documents reveal that Canilao was charged with the death of his 76-year-old wife and found with blood on his chest, legs, and socks when officers arrived at the scene in October 2022.
The doctors’ assessment concluded that Canilao poses a moderate to high risk to the community and has ordered his commitment to the state hospital for treatment.
Canilao was initially held on a $1 million bail, and his case has been under judicial review since then.
As a result of the doctors’ findings, the court has decided against proceeding with a trial.
Canilao will remain at the state hospital for the foreseeable future as part of his treatment and evaluation.
