Officials said the death “was reported as an alleged dog attack” that happened Thursday evening.

A post-mortem examination is being conducted to determine the exact cause of death.

The incident is under investigation by the NOAA Office of Law Enforcement.

Officials would like to remind the public that Hawaiian monk seal pupping season peaks from March through August.

Beachgoers should stay at least 150 away from mothers and their pups. In addition, dog owners are advised to keep their dogs on a leash while at the beach.
