HONOLULU (KHON2) — Have a passion for protecting? Got a knack for giving back? If so, you may want to consider one of these careers that are currently hiring.
Honolulu Ocean Safety Department and Honolulu Police Department are both hosting open recruitments to hire anyone looking to serve and protect Oʻahu’s residents.
Lifeguard Recruitment
Ocean Safety is looking to hire part-time, on-call contract beach lifeguards.
The registration event is Nov. 14 and Nov. 15 at the Ocean Safety Training at Ala Moana Beach Park. Registration will be open from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. All applicants are required to have:
- Current/valid Driver’s License.
- High school diploma, GED, or proof of finishing high school.
- Completed an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Class, or equivalent.
- Completed a basic first aid class.
- Completed an American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer Class or American Heart Association BLS Healthcare Provider Class, or equivalent.
After you have completed the application, there will be a physical performance exam on Nov. 21 and Nov. 22. The physical performance exam requires participants to complete the following exercises:
- 1000 Yard Run and 1000-yard swim under 25 minutes.
- Run-Swim-Run 100 yards each length under 3 minutes.
- 400 Yard rescue board paddle under 4 minutes.
If you complete the physical exam, you will then complete an in-person interview on Nov. 25.

Police Recruit Testing
HPD is hosting a walk-in police recruit testing event for potential metropolitan police recruits and police services officers, also known as the Cadet Program.
The event will be on Nov. 1 at Mililani High School, check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. and testing at 9 a.m. Applicants can apply online in advance or show up on the day of the event.

Applicants are required to meet the minimum qualification requirements:
- High School Diploma or General Educational Diploma (GED).
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver’s license.
- US Citizen, US National, or Legal Permanent Resident (green card holder).
If you meet the requirements, you will then complete an entrance exam and a physical readiness exam. The physical components will include:
- Agility run in 21.6 seconds.
- 300-meter run in 82.8 seconds.
- 24 push-ups.
- 24 sit-ups 1 minute.
- 1.5-Mile run in 21 minutes.
