Oʻahu jury convicts man who had violent encounter with HPD

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A Honolulu jury has found Dion Kitzmiller guilty of three counts of criminal property damage in the first degree and one count of ownership or possession of a firearm prohibited by a felon.

This all stems from a confrontation with officers from the Honolulu Police Department in 2021.

On May 25, 2021, plainclothes officers from the Honolulu Police Department’s Crime Reduction Unit set up a tactical operation to arrest Kitzmiller on warrants.

Police blocked his vehicle inside an apartment complex late that night. When officers rushed toward his car with weapons drawn, Kitzmiller tried to escape, according to police.

His car collided with two unmarked police vehicles before crashing into a concrete pier, police said.

Officers then surrounded him. Court records state that Officer Christopher Goshi fired five shots into Kitzmiller’s vehicle and struck him several times.

Kitzmiller was taken to The Queen’s Medical Center, where doctors performed surgery for life-threatening injuries. He survived but suffered lasting physical and emotional harm.

“We want to thank the jury for the time they took in coming to their decision to convict Mr. Kitzmiller. ON that day in 2021, Mr. Kitzmiller put the lives of our offers in harm’s way when he drove his car at them and brandished a weapon, as they tried to arrest him,” said Prosecuting Attorney Steve Alm. “We intend to seek the maximum sentence possible in this case so that Mr. Kitzmiller cannot harm anyone else in our community.”

The Prosecuting Attorney’s office said that sentencing is set for Jan. 8, 2026.

They also said that criminal property damage in the first degree and one count of ownership or possession of a firearm prohibited by a felon, for which Kitzmiller was convicted, are class B felonies and carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

Kitzmiller later filed a civil complaint against the City and County of Honolulu, Officer Goshi and other unnamed officers.
