Oʻahu’s 50th fatality highlights traffic crisis in 2025

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Oʻahu is experiencing a deadly surge as the number of traffic fatalities has doubled from 2024.

On Sunday, Aug. 10, the Honolulu Police Department said they were called to a collision between a motorcycle and a car at around 7:15 p.m.

HPD reported that a vehicle driven by a 44-year-old female made a left turn onto Waiomea Street as she was traveling westbound on Farrington Highway. This turn was made against a red arrow signal.

Once she made the turn, according to police, she was broadsided by a motorcycle being driven by a 25-year-old male who was traveling eastbound on Farrington Highway.

The collision ejected the motorcyclist into the rear of the vehicle being driven by the 44-year-old, said police.

The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services said they were called to the scene at around 7:25 p.m., where they found the 25-year-old motorcyclist unresponsive. They said they brought him to a local area emergency room in critical condition.

Police said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and that the female driver complained of pain but refused treatment.

On Monday, Aug. 11, HPD updated the information regarding the condition of the motorcyclist.

According to HPD, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office contacted their Traffic Division, Vehicular Homicide Section to let them know the 25-year-old male motorcyclist had succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

This is the 50th traffic fatality to occur on Oʻahu for 2025. At this time in 2024, Oʻahu had 25 traffic fatalities.
