Oahu inmate back in custody after work pass breach

HONOLULU (KHON2) — An Oahu Community Correctional Center inmate who failed to return from a work furlough pass on Thursday is back in custody after turning himself in over the weekend, state officials said.

John Mahaulu, 38, reported to the Kapolei Police Station late Saturday night and was transported back to OCCC by state sheriff’s deputies.

He was officially returned to custody at 12:10 a.m. Sunday, according to the state Department of Public Safety.

Mahaulu was scheduled to return to OCCC by 9:30 p.m.

Thursday after leaving Module 20 on a furlough pass that morning. When he failed to report back on time, both the Honolulu Police Department and State Sheriffs were alerted.

He is currently serving time for second-degree robbery and first-degree criminal property damage. Officials said Mahaulu could now face an additional charge of second-degree escape — a Class C felony that carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison if convicted.

Mahaulu is classified as a community custody inmate, the lowest level of security.

He was participating in the work furlough program, which allows eligible inmates to leave the facility for approved purposes.
