HONOLULU (KHON2) — A potential shake-up is making its way to college football after the Associated Press reported that the Pac-12 was recruiting multiple Mountain West schools to rebuild their conference.

Currently, the Pac-12 consists of Oregon State and Washington State after other schools moved to different conferences including big-name schools such as USC and UCLA.

According to AP sources, the Pac-12 is eying Boise State, Fresno State, Colorado State and San Diego State. Sources added that all four schools are applying to be part of the conference.

If the change occurs, eight schools will be left in the Mountain West including UH, San Jose and UNLV.

Former UH football player and Rainbow Warrior broadcaster Rich Miano revealed that this change has been brewing for many years.

“The lack of vision, the lack of direction. When you don’t have a brass practice field and you’re one of the 132 teams in the FBS,” Miano said.

He also pointed out that having a proper stadium, performance center, nutritional center and legacy hall can help keep a program in the division.

“One status, but help all of the athletic programs,” he added. “Anybody that’s been affiliated or associated with this program has not done their job to position Hawaii to be in the Pac-12 or been in the Mountain West much longer.”

If the Pac-12 receives any new members, the change would not go into effect until 2026 and the teams will need to pay millions of dollars in exit fees to the Mountain West.
