HILO, Hawai’i (KHON2) — Hawai’i Island police have identified the second female whose remains were recovered in July from the fallen banyan tree in downtown Hilo.
The first female was previously identified to be 35-year-old Trisha Almazan, of Keaau. The second female was recently identified to be 48-year-old Michelle Katrina Noelani Comer, of Keaau.
On July 12, a banyan tree on Kiluea Ave. in Hilo blocked roads, downed power lines and damaged property when it collapsed unexpectedly.
Days following the collapse, two female remains were discovered underneath the debris on July 20.
After the discovery, on July 22, the cause of death was ruled for both victims to be mechanical asphyxiation and accidental death after autopsies were performed.
