HONOLULU (KHON2) — Shinnyo Lantern Floating Hawai‘i, the annual Memorial Day ceremony, will celebrate its 25th anniversary at Ala Moana Beach Park on Monday, May 27.
“It’s all-encompassing for people who have experienced loss and who are suffering and not just people, but this earth,” stated Kathy Muneno, Creative Producer of the event.
The ceremony’s theme, ‘Many Rivers, One Ocean’ will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Event organizers are expecting 40,000 to 50,000 attendees. 6,000 candle-lit lanterns bearing remembrances, prayers and affirmations will be set afloat at sunset.
Performers and organizers have been setting up and preparing for the past week.
“To try to express that in a visual way and in terms of sounds and music as well was difficult, but an honor. I just hope that people feel something beautiful because of it,” said Muneno.
Muneno added 2024’s ceremony will be especially meaningful following the Maui Wildfires. According to the creative producer, the ceremony will incorporate Maui in various ways on stage.
“This is the first year to have a different lantern and to have a lantern dedicated to this earth,” stated Muneno. “It represents prayers for the oceans, the heavens, the light and all living things and spirits.”
The new lantern was created by Malama Honua Public Charter School students and will be displayed on stage.
Unlike the year prior, the stage was designed to give a more immersive experience for guests. According to Stage Manager, Elizabeth O’Brien,” there will be no back walls on the stage for a clear view to the ocean.
For those looking to float a lantern out to sea, you can pick one up at the lantern request tent between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Beach Park on Monday. Guests are encouraged to arrive early due to limited parking.
