Puna man, 39, arrested on suspicion of auto theft

HAWAII ISLAND, Hawaii (KHON2) — Hawaiʻi Police Department officers arrested a 39-year-old Puna man on Oct. 16 on suspicion of first-degree theft and unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.

Officials were investigating a stolen vehicle case when they spotted a car matching the missing vehicle’s description at a residence shortly before 5 p.m.

The suspect, who is known to authorities, was spotted standing next to the vehicle, HPD said. He is also known to be armed and dangerous.

Cautious of the situation, the responding officer waited for backup nearby, then returned to the scene, authorities said.

Upon return to the scene, the suspect was no longer outside and the window curtains were drawn closed, officers said.

Officials identified the situation as a potential threat, as the suspect was inside with other individuals known to frequent the residence. Police called in their Special Response and Crisis Negotiation Teams to assist, as officers secured the perimeter, authorities said.

Negotiators made loud, verbal commands for the occupants of the building to exit, with the suspect exiting the residence at approximately 10:30 p.m.

He was then taken into custody on suspicion of two crimes, police said. There were no other occupants recorded in the building, and the vehicle was confirmed to be stolen, HPD said.
