Remembering President Russell M. Nelson: A life of love and service

HONOLULU (KHON2) – President Russell M. Nelson, leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away after more than a century of serving and uplifting others. Even for those not of his faith, his life is an inspiring example of kindness, hard work, and love.

Before he became a church leader, President Nelson was a world-famous heart surgeon. In 1955, he performed Utah’s first open-heart surgery and helped create the heart-lung machine that has saved many lives. He reminded his medical team that every patient had a family praying for them and deserved the best care.

President Nelson became an Apostle in 1984 and the Church’s President in 2018. He traveled to more than 30 countries, meeting people of many faiths and cultures. He met Pope Francis at the Vatican and worked closely with the NAACP to support education and bring communities together.

As President, he encouraged members to focus on Jesus Christ and made changes to help families worship at home. He announced 200 new temples and updated programs for children and youth so people everywhere could feel closer to God.

Within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he often said, “Think Celestial”, as he encouraged others to think positively.

President Nelson often said it was time to put aside bitterness and choose peace. He wanted everyone to love and support one another. His life demonstrates that true greatness stems from serving others, whether in a hospital, at home, or around the world.

President Nelson will be remembered not only for his remarkable achievements but also for his gentle heart and his belief that love can bring people together.
