Removal process begins for grounded shuttle boat at Kewalo Basin

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Crews have determined the optimal time to begin removing a grounded 75-foot shuttle boat at Kewalo Basin.

The Discovery boat, operated by Atlantis Adventures, ran aground on Saturday, August 9, and came to rest against a rock wall, unable to be removed due to water intrusion.

According to Atlantis Adventures, agencies will begin removing the boat during the afternoon hours of Tuesday, Aug. 19, when the tide will be at its highest level.

We have meticulously planned this towing processs, as our top priority is doing everything possible to not damage the marine environment, or cause bodily harm to the maritime industry professionals conducting the towing.

Officials said Cates Marine Services of Honolulu will tow the Discovery into deeper water to assess the vessel’s condition.

They added that all fuel, oil and batteries have been removed.

Following the inspection, the vessel will then be taken to Keehi Marine Center for further inspection and repairs.

“We apologize to the surfers, fishermen and other people who enjoy the ocean waters at Kewalo Basin for the disruption that the grounding of Discovery has created,” Atlantis Adventures added in its statement.

The case remains under investigation.
