The Better Business Bureau said returns are not always easy, so the nonprofit has prepared tips to help make your holiday returns and exchanges as simple and streamlined as possible.

According to Cameron Nakashima from the BBB, stores are not legally required to accept returns or offer exchanges unless the merchandise is defective or misrepresented. Many stores do accept refunds and exchanges, but policies can change frequently. So even if you’re familiar with a store’s return policies, they may adjust their terms over time or during the holiday season.

Nakashima said if the store does accept returns, there are still things to be aware of:

· Fees – such as restocking or return shipping charges

· Money-type refunded (cash, store credit, or exchange)

· And any holiday-specific return rules

The most important thing is to act quickly–return windows are often time-sensitive and many stores shorten their policies for holiday purchases. Return items as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline. He also advises to:

· Bring the receipt, warranty, and packaging: most stores require the original receipt and packaging for returns or exchanges. If you’re giving a gift, include a gift receipt, and keep any you receive.

· Have your ID and credit card ready: many retailers require an ID to prevent return scams. Some may also need the original payment method, so gift-givers may need to assist with returns.
