HONOLULU (KHON2) — Wednesday evening, Diane Ung’s 18-year-old daughter was trying to parallel park her car on Halekauwila Street, her 7-month-old daughter in the backseat, Diane riding shotgun.
A speeding Tesla zipped by – fast enough for her daughter to yell out in concern.
“This guy just comes zooming down, maybe about 40 to 50 in a 25-mile-per-hour zone. And my daughter just like sticks her head out the window and says, ‘slow down,’” said Diane Ung.
Surveillance video shows the Tesla turning around, park across the street, and a man approaching the driver’s side of her daughter’s car.
“He started screaming at my daughter, telling her all these swear words and everything,” said Diane. “And he reached in the window and just like punched her right in her jaw area.”
Mother’s instincts kicked in and Diane jumped out of the car, furious.
“I know I’m not supposed to do this, but out of frustration, I threw my coffee at him and he came running across the street and punched me right in my eye,” said Ung.
She suffered a gash that required eight stitches. Her daughter has bruises on her neck and jaw. The baby? Thankfully uninjured. But witnesses say the trauma was felt all around.
“It just blew my mind. How could somebody even do something like that?” said Guy Martinez, who witnessed the entire incident from his business across the street.
The suspect, Nathaniel Radimak, 38, fled after the attack, running through a stop sign. Honolulu police say he identified shortly after the assault and was tracked down at an apartment on Ala Wai Boulevard the next day.
Police say Radimak has a violent history of road rage in California, including multiple convictions. According to court records, he served only 10 months of a 5-year sentence, and somehow had his parole transferred from California to Hawaii.
“He was visiting for a while and after he was here for a while, he was super nice, but I could tell when he got frustrated, he had a very short fuse,” said Mark Danielson, property manager of the Ala Wai apartment complex where Radimak was staying.
As for Diane, she hasn’t yet returned to work, still trying to process the ordeal.
“Every time I shut my eyes, I just see his face. That’s how paranoid I am,” said Diane.
He was charged for assault and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle and two counts of assault. His bail has been set at $100,000.
Additionally, he was arrested on a no-bail parole revocation warrant.
