Saint Louis football begins defense of state title at Kahuku

Believe it or not, the Hawai‘i high school football season is already underway, and it’s kicking off with a bang.

In the marquee matchup of Week 1, defending Open Division state champion Saint Louis will travel to the North Shore to face Kahuku in a rematch of last season’s title game. The showdown is scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Carlton E. Weimer Field.

Despite wearing the crown, the Crusaders are embracing an underdog mentality as they begin their title defense. The squad is led by standout defensive back Jahren Altura, a University of Hawai‘i commit, and quarterback Nainoa Lopes, who is committed to Cal.

“It’s a big mindset shift,” Altura said. “I think we still have a big chip on our shoulder. We still have lots to prove. I think a lot of people are still doubting us. Everybody competes at a super high level and takes this very seriously. The competitive nature of our team, and all the other teams, makes it really special.”

“We’re just trying to be the standard,” Lopes added. “Everyone’s trying to beat us right now. I feel like we’re just trying to go out with a bang. This team has a really special personality. From last year to now, it feels like we have a brand-new label. I think we’re just going to keep growing from here.”

Saturday’s clash features the two programs that have combined to win the last nine Open Division state titles, a heavyweight bout that sets the tone for another highly competitive season.
