HONOLULU (KHON2) — Santa’s helpers are busy helping our Kupuna this year. For families who may not be close by or maybe even spending the holidays alone, Senior Helpers are there to lift spirits.
Doris and Mario Domingo just had their 60th wedding anniversary. They met at a café in a small German town in 1962 when Mario was serving in the military. Two years later, he would propose.
“It was love at first sight,” stated Mario. “She was a beautiful lady at that time.”
Both 86 years old, they’ve loved each other for better or worse, in sickness and in health.
“I’m the CFO and CEO of the house,” said Doris. “I handle everything financial. More than anything, I handle his appointments. Some mornings I work from eight to 12 and I feel like I’m in an office.”
That’s why Doris has help from Senior Helpers, a service providing in home care for Kupuna. During the holidays, Senior Helpers do a lot more from baking holiday treats to wrapping gifts.
“Typically, we help them with their personal care needs in the morning, getting Mr. Domingo up and ready for the day.,” said Jenny Cambra, Owner of Senior Helpers. “But today, we’re going to do something special. We’re going to celebrate the holidays by helping him to decorate his house and also adding little bit more holiday fun.”
Senior Helpers share companionship and support year-round, but the holidays can be more meaningful.
“It’s like they’re my family. He loves Filipino foods so I love to cook for him also, and for the family,” stated Thelma Coloma, Personal Care Aid. “It helps Mrs. Domingo to do her own errands while I’m here.”
