Search for missing Kailua paddler enters final day; press conference scheduled

KAILUA, Hawaii (KHON2) — Multiple first responder agencies are working tirelessly in hopes of locating a missing paddler in the waters off Kailua Beach — but the search is entering its third and final day.

The Honolulu Fire Department and partner agencies said they will be holding a final press conference at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, to discuss any updates.

In the latest update, officials said there were no new clues in this missing paddler case, which initially began on Sunday, Oct. 19.

According to Honolulu Ocean Safety, a one-man canoe was spotted overturned and without a paddler about 300 yards off Popoia Island, or Flat Island, near Kailua Beach Park. The paddle was found by a foil-boarder about 100 yards away from the canoe.

Family members identified the paddler as 59-year-old Jon Naeole, who they say is a strong and experienced waterman.

HFD, Honolulu Ocean Safety, Department of Land and Natural Resources and the United States Coast Guard are assisting in the search.

HFD Captain Dean Bladeviso said they have one crew on the ground searching the shoreline, a drone team searching between Lanikai and the Mokulua islands, rescue dive teams near Flat Island and Air 1 searching from above.

Tune in to KHON2 at 5 p.m. to watch the press conference live.
