The areas include Lahaina, Kāʻaanapali, Kahana, Māhinahina, Nāpili-Honokowai and Honokōhau.
Dry weather conditions and a lack of rainfall in the area have prompted officials to upgrade to a Stage 2 until water source levels are restored, officials report.
A Stage 2 water shortage is also put into effect when water usage is predicted to exceed the available water supply by 16-30%.
The Director of Water Supply, with the Mayor’s approval, declares these water shortages whenever the water supply is insufficient. This can be caused by periods of drought, technical or infrastructure malfunctions, natural disasters, or any other events that can lead to water scarcity.
Officials advise water consumers in the area to follow these guidelines:
- All non-essential water use for industrial and commercial purposes is to stop.
- Irrigation is permitted one day a week, following the schedule:
- Wednesday for even-numbered residential addresses.
- Thursday for odd-numbered residential addresses.
- Friday for even-numbered commercial facilities and multifamily units.
- Saturday for even-numbered commercial facilities and multifamily units.
- Plant containers, trees, shrubs and vegetable gardens may be watered one additional day using only drip irrigation.
- Repairs must be made to all leaks, breaks and faulty sprinklers within three days of the notice.
- Potable water is prohibited at temporary construction meters.
- Irrigation schedule applies to all schools, parks and recreational fields.
In June 2022, officials put the Stage 1 water shortage into effect.
