State automates Honolulu parking garage, changes in parking process

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Hawaiʻi Department of Accounting and General Services Automotive Management Division is set to automate payments at the South Street lot connected to the First Circuit Court on Aug. 11.

The lot’s automation will affect lawyers, prosecutors, jurors, witnesses and more.

“We are more efficiently using our state resources by automating the payment process. Currently one parking attendant staffs the booth at the gate and one attendant patrols the lot for parking payment compliance,” DAGS Director and Comptroller Keith Regan said. “We will reassign those workers to other duties to better serve the public.”

The state says that this change will allow an increase in parking patrol officers, which will in turn enhance the safety of the garage.

The parking area is open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, with a total of 475 stalls for both employees and the public. On a busy day, the state estimates up to 650 people park at the garage.

Those looking to use the parking space will need to pull a ticket at the gate, with patrons paying for their parking prior to leaving.

There are several different types of entry tickets, with the process differing for some tickets. For more information on the various ticket types, visit the state’s website.

Jurors will need to follow a different procedure for parking in the garage, which is outlined in an educational video on YouTube.

“We’re excited about modernizing our payment system and we will have attendants on hand for the first two months to help transition customers,” Automotive Management Division Administrator Michael Arakaki said.

The success of the automation will be monitored by the state, who hopes to automate all 33 DAGS parking lots across the islands.
