Submit ideas to update Honolulu City charter

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Charter Commission met on Monday, Nov. 3.

It’s part of a once-a-decade effort to update the City’s charter, which is the equivalent of its constitution.

The Commission has received dozens of suggested changes from a wide array of public voices.

“We are scheduling for Nov. 17 through February an initial review of all of the proposals for completeness by the commission here,” said Dawn Szewczyk, Honolulu Charter Commission Chair. “And then corporation counsel will be conducting jurisdictional review, and then staff will be classifying each proposal as need more information or complete.”

Topics such as safety or better ways to run existing or potentially new departments or divisions are frequent suggestions.

Anything that makes the cut during the public process, which runs in to next year, will be drafted as ballot amendments for voting next fall.

The deadline to submit ideas is Nov. 7. Ideas can be submitted HERE.
