SUN Bucks program to help feed families with school-aged children

HONOLULU (KHON2) — A new benefits program will help keep students across the state to be well-fed this summer.

The Department of Human Services and the Department of Education have partnered together to introduce SUN Bucks for families with school-aged children.

SUN Bucks will allow families to purchase more nutritious meals for their students while schools are closed for the summer.

According to DHS, families are eligible for $177 per child for the summer. DHS said most eligible families will receive SUN bucks automatically without an application need. Some parents may still need to apply.


Hawaii DHS issues fraud alert regarding fraudulent calls

Families wanting to participate in the program should start preparing soon.

Parents need to ensure their mailing address is current with their child’s school, SNAP and TANF case record.

SUN Bucks will be mailed to the address listed for each eligible child and issued to EBT cards.

The following families are eligible for SUN Bucks benefits without an application:

Children who applied and were approved for the National School Lunch Program to receive free or reduced-price school meals.

Children who did not apply for NSLP and are provided free or reduced-price meals.

Students who are experiencing homelessness.

Migrant children.
