HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Honolulu Police Commission met on June 4 but could not discuss Chief Joe Logan’s retirement due to state law.
The commission meeting went forward but Logan’s June 30th retirement could not be discussed due to sunshine laws. Testifiers voiced strong opinions on his exit and Mayor Rick Blangiardi’s quick push for Hawaii County Chief Ben Moszkowicz as interim chief.
“I think in this case he’s overstepped his authority in leadership, done disservice to this department. I think he was out of order to talk to chief into resigning, but it is what it is,” said retired police Lt. Alexander Garcia.
Commission member Doug Chin praised Logan for his commitment and noted the Honolulu Police Department’s ongoing operations amid the transition.
“Despite all that’s going on outside, we’re still functioning, the day-to-day work is still being done, and you are showing up and that means a lot, I appreciate it,” Chin said.
Applicants for the interim chief position have until June 13 to get their resumes in for consideration — two have done so already.
“We have Chief Moskowitz, Ben Moskowitz, and then we also have Tommy Aiu. I had just heard from my executive officer that he had submitted,” said Commission chair Ken Silva.
The Commission will address Logan’s retirement and the interim chief appointment at their next meeting on June 18.
