HONOLULU (KHON2) — The suspect in an acid attack in Chinatown has been arrested.
On Aug. 17, Honolulu police took to social media to announce that Marquis Johnson had turned himself in around 5:30 p.m.
Johnson turned himself in at the main police station. Detectives took him into custody for Assault in the First Degree.
This follows an incident on Aug. 8 near Smith and Hotel streets, where a 30-year-old man was left in serious condition after the Honolulu Fire Department said the man suffered burn wounds from sulfuric acid.
According to HPD, the victim was crossing the street when Johnson allegedly approached him and asked him a few questions before throwing acid on him. As a result of the attack, the victim sustained severe burns to his face and upper body.
“I’m just going off what we know, and what we do know is the victim said he did not know him,” said HPD Lt. Deena Thoemmes. “That’s what we were told, but that may change depending on how the investigation progresses.”
Charges are pending.
