HONOLULU (KHON2) — The two teens who died Saturday while fishing at Kaena Point have been identified as seniors at Waianae High School. Friends are heartbroken and left wondering what happened since both were experienced fishermen.
Loved ones share hugs, tears and memories as a memorial grows for the two teens who died while fishing over the weekend.
“They very, very good boys,” said Jaysha Saltiban, friend to both. “They didn’t deserve this.”
The incident happened Saturday morning at Kaena Point. Friends say one of the boys was swept into the water and the other jumped in to help. They’re not sure who was in the water first.
“Just wondering how everything happened,” said Saltiban. “If they suffered, if it was quick, I just hope that they didn’t suffer too long.”
“We went fishing right before,” said Koa Akoi, a friend. “We left around five o’clock and had a bad feeling. It was rough the waves.”
Friends say the two teens were avid fishermen, very experienced. Even though they say the conditions here were extremely rough, the question remains what happened.
The Department of Education sent home a letter to Waianae High School students, families and staff about the tragedy. The school is offering grief counseling to those who need it.
Friends say the teens were graduating this school year.
“What would you wanna tell him right now? I miss him,” said Akoi.
“I hope that you guys okay, hope you guys aren’t suffering,” said Saltiban. “Want you guys to watch over your guys family. Take care of everybody. Make sure everybody else knows to always love your loved ones. You know tomorrow’s never promised.”
