The mid-century modern murder mystery you need to see

HONOLULU (KHON2) — If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, then look no further than Hawaiʻi Theatre. KHON2’s own Joe Moore and former Jeopardy host Pat Sajak are in the thick of a murder mystery that will delight and entertain you.

Refashioned into a play, Prescription: Murder was a 1968 TV movie that introduced the character of Lieutenant Columbo. The plot centers on Dr. Ray Fleming (played by Sajak), a successful psychiatrist who plots the perfect murder to get rid of his wealthy and controlling wife.

With the help of his mistress, he creates an airtight alibi and stages the crime to look like a burglary gone wrong.

However, the seemingly absent-minded but shrewd detective, Lt. Columbo (played by Moore) starts investigating and slowly unravels the truth.

Lt. Columbo’s persistent questioning and disarming demeanor led Dr. Fleming to underestimate him. Bit by bit, Lt. Columbo exposes inconsistencies in the doctor’s story and applies psychological pressure. Ultimately, the murderer’s overconfidence becomes his downfall.

Taking place in the historic Hawaiʻi Theatre really makes this play feel like the mid-century experience the play wants you to have.

With its ornamental decor that blends neoclassical, art deco and beaux-arts design elements, you feel immersed in Lt. Columbo’s world of 1960s Los Angeles.

The acting is quite a treat, too. From Sajak and Moore to their co-stars, Therese Olivar, Amy K. Sullivan, Bryce Moore and Aiko Chenin, you feel the chemistry and commitment radiating from the stage, as each performer brings depth and energy to their roles and create a seamless ensemble that draws the audience in.
