HONOLULU (KHON2) — Windward Community College is set to host a unique literary event tomorrow, featuring renowned author Tom Peek.
The event will be held in the library from 2 to 4 p.m. and is open to the public, free of charge. Attendees can look forward to an engaging reading session and a chance to interact with Peek and his wife, artist Cas Robinson, whose art adorns the book’s cover.
Desi Poteet, a Language Arts professor at Windward Community College, expressed excitement about the event.
“Tom Peek is a remarkable author,” Prof. Poteet said. “He doesn’t just read from his books; he truly connects with his audience. His approach to storytelling and interaction makes his events special and memorable.”
Peek is known for his novel Mauna Kea, which explores the cultural and spiritual conflicts surrounding Hawai‘i’s sacred Mauna Kea mountain.
The novel delves into the clash between science and spirituality through the story of a young man who confronts his grief and finds solace among Native Hawaiians and ancient deities. Prof. Poteet praised the book for its deep connection to Hawaiian culture.
“Tom’s work is a love letter to the islands,” she remarked. “It beautifully captures the essence of Hawai‘i and the struggles to protect its sacred spaces.”
The event will also feature Robinson, whose artwork graces the cover of Mauna Kea. Robinson’s art, like Peek’s writing, reflects a deep reverence for Hawaiian culture and landscapes.
The couple’s collaborative efforts highlight their shared commitment to preserving and celebrating the beauty of Hawai‘i.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions and activities led by Peek and Robinson. Prof. Poteet highlighted that Peek’s interactive style extends beyond the reading.
“Tom and Cas will be working with our students, leading activities that honor their writing and artistic efforts,” she said. “It’s a wonderful chance for our community to connect with these talented individuals and gain insight into their creative processes.”
For those unable to attend, the event will be recorded and archived by the library, allowing for future access. Prof. Poteet emphasized the importance of this accessibility.
“We want everyone to have the chance to experience Tom’s reading, even if they can’t make it in person,” she said.
The event’s organization was a team effort, and Prof. Poteet expressed gratitude to her colleagues who helped bring it together on short notice.
“Ellie, our librarian, did an incredible job getting the word out,” she noted. “Her enthusiasm and dedication were crucial in making this event happen.”
The library’s beautiful space, with its large windows and welcoming atmosphere, will provide a fitting backdrop for the event. Parking is available on campus, with the closest lot located near the public school and the Akeelah Theater.
In closing, Prof. Poteet invited everyone to attend. “It’s going to be a fantastic event,” she said. “Whether you’re a student, staff member, or a member of the community, we hope you’ll join us for this special occasion.”
