KAANAPALI (KHON2) — Three people are hospitalized following a near-fatal crash on Honoapiilani Highway on Maui.
According to Maui police, at around 12:30 a.m. on Sun., Aug. 24, a gold 2002 Toyota 4Runner was traveling north on Honoapiilani Highway when it drifted left over the solid white lane line and slightly entered the left-turn lane for Keka’a Drive.
The vehicle then struck multiple traffic markers, which caused the 18-year-old driver to swerve.
Police said the car started to roll over, and the 18-year-old driver was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the roadway. As a result, the Wailuku male was left in critical condition with life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center.
According to police, two 18-year-old passengers suffered minor injuries and were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Police said the driver and rear passenger were not wearing seatbelts.
Further investigation revealed that the airbags did not deploy in the vehicle.
Police believe alcohol may have played a role in the crash.
