HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Tour de Trash makes four stops: RRR recycling center, Hawaiian Earth Recycling, the Waimanalo Gulch landfill and H-POWER — where trash is burned to generate electricity. It’s a rare chance for the public to see how all the pieces fit together.
City officials say the goal is education, but it’s also about accountability. They want people to understand how much trash Oʻahu produces, the costs of managing it and how long the landfill can realistically keep up.
At the same time, critics question whether recycling and waste-to-energy are enough to meet the demand.
This weekend’s tour is already booked up, but more are planned later this year. And being out here at Kalaeloa really underscores why the city is opening the doors — waste is something we all create, and it must go somewhere.
