HONOLULU (KHON2) — KHON2’s Weather Source is tracking the first hurricane in the Central Pacific for the 2025 season — Hurricane Iona.
Hurricane Iona has been classified as a Category 1 hurricane so far, but is expected to intensify by mid-week with gusts from 85 to 100 mph by Tuesday, July 29, which could up its status to Category 2.
Though it does not pose an immediate threat or direct impact and landfall to the Hawaiian Islands, the outer bands could still bring heavy winds, especially to the eastern islands.
Officials said the heavy winds could uptick the possible chances for brush fires.
Hurricane Iona will weaken by this weekend, as the track remains south of the Hawaiian Islands.
