Trial delayed again in Makaha crash case, now set for October

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The trial for the four Honolulu police officers accused in connection with a 2021 crash in Makaha, which left six people injured, has been postponed until October.

This marks the fourth delay in the trial proceedings.

Among the officers facing charges is Joshua Nahulu, who stands accused of collisions resulting in death or serious bodily injury.

The other officers—Erik Smith, Jake Bartolome, and Robert Lewis—are charged with hindering prosecution and conspiracy.

All four officers have previously entered pleas of not guilty.

Prosecutors assert that the officers pursued a vehicle until it crashed, after which they allegedly attempted to conceal their involvement by feigning ignorance of the incident.

The trial, initially set to commence in early June, has been rescheduled to begin on Oct. 7 following a request from the defense for additional time to prepare.
