HONOLULU (KHON2) — The homeowners of the residence that exploded in a frenzy of fireworks on New Year’s Day were arrested on the afternoon of Feb. 23 for fireworks offenses.
The homeowners, a 60-year-old male and female, mark a dozen arrests in the investigation. The other 10 arrested have been released pending investigation.
The Aliamanu explosion has killed six people so far, including a toddler, and several victims remain hospitalized. The explosion occurred after an aerial cake was lit in the driveway of the residence, where a New Year’s gathering was occurring, when the cake fell on its side and shot aerials into two crates that contained additional explosives, detonating them.
The explosion has set off a string of safety measures against illegal fireworks, such as legislation and amnesty events.
