UH move-ins begin: What to expect

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Between UH Manoa’s 10 residential halls and two apartment complexes, there are about 4,000 students living on campus. Starting Friday and going into the coming week, students will begin moving in.

With move-in week kicking off, it means that the roads will once again be filled with everyone’s favorite nuisance, traffic.

“Traffic is very bad in the beginning of the semester, especially during move-in week,” said Dylan Flanders, a UH commuter and student worker. “Personally, I had to leave about an hour or two earlier because the traffic can be very rough.”

Flanders is a Mililani resident and says the move-in traffic can sometimes add over an hour of time to his commute.

Today, move-ins began for Walter Dods, Jr. RISE Center, the first of the UH residency to open move-ins. Workers said that traffic was a bit rough earlier in the day when the first wave hit, but other than that didn’t back up too much.

But when the move-ins for the dorms begin next week is when it’s expected to really pick up.

“There was a lot of traffic coming down from University (Ave.) up from the freeway down over, so there’s a lot of overflow in that direction,” said UH student Noah Sasaki, reflecting on move-ins at the dorms. “It was kind of difficult for us to move everything in and then get our stuff. I think a couple of hours, maybe even a bit longer than that.”

In preparation for the backed-up lines and overall increase of cars on the road, it may be time to consider setting earlier alarms and moving on from the summer schedule.

“Next week I’m planning on switching my schedule a little bit because of all the new people moving in,” said Flanders on adjusting his work hours.

Flanders says he’s used to sleeping till 11, but with the traffic rush, that’s no longer possible.

“Guess that meant I’ll be taking some longer naps,” said Flanders.
