UPS plane heading to Honolulu crashes near Louisville airport

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Multiple people have been reported injured in Kentucky following a cargo plane crash at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.

According to officials, the crash involving UPS Flight 2976 happened around 5:20 p.m. Eastern time during its departure from the airport.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was heading for Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

Local police have placed a shelter-in-place order for “all locations within five miles of the airport” and said “injuries were reported.”

The department added that the community should “stay away” from the area due to an “active scene with fire and debris.”

UPS said three crewmembers were onboard the flight, and they have not confirmed any injuries or casualties at this time.

At this time, the cause of the crash is unclear. UPS added that they would release more information as it becomes available.

Gov. Andy Beshear and other emergency management officials are expected to hold a press conference at 7:30 p.m. local time.

The FAA and NTSB are leading the investigation into the crash.
