VIDEO: Over 800 swimmers turnout for annual Roughwater event at Waikiki

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Swimmers, take your marks! On Sept. 1, a total of 817 swimmers participated in the 54th annual Roughwater Swim at Waikiki.

This swim has been a Labor Day tradition in Hawaii since 1970.

The race is almost 2.4 miles. It started at 8:30 a.m. on Kaimana Beach and ended in front of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Seventeen-year-old Kona Flanagan is one of the many swimmers who turned out for the event. Flanagan has been participating in this race since she was 10.

She finished at 46:11 as second overall female.

“I think the conditions were pretty good. It was one of the fastest times I’ve ever done it,” Flanagan said. “It was smooth going out, going in I caught a wave, so it was pretty fun.”
