Volunteers, donations welcomed at annual Food Drive Day

HONOLULU (KHON2) – Hawaiʻi Foodbank is kicking off its annual food drive on Saturday, Aug. 2, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. around Oahu.

Food drives will be located at Ka Makana Ali’i, Pearl City Shopping Center, Town Center of Mililani, Waiokeola Congregational Church, Waterfront Plaza and Windward City Shopping Center.

Organizers told KHON2 that “Food Drive Day” is Hawai’i Foodbank’s largest and most highly anticipated community engagement event.

Food Drive Day raises awareness about hunger in Hawai’i and rallies support around Hawai’i Foodbank’s mission to nourish our ‘ohana today and end hunger tomorrow.

On this special day, Hawai’i Foodbank will gather with hundreds of volunteers at collection sites throughout the state — collecting food and monetary donations from the community.

In the weeks leading up to Food Drive Day — businesses, organizations, groups and individuals are invited to make a donation online or host their own food and fund drives in support of Hawai’i Foodbank.

Then, on Saturday, Aug. 2, they are invited to drop off their food and monetary donations at their nearest collection site.

KHON2 was told there are easy ways to help and get involved.

Volunteers are needed at the Food Drive Day collection sites to help with sign waving, food sorting and other activities.

People are also encouraged to host their own food or fund drive to collect donations from now up until Saturday, Aug. 2. Those donations can then be brought to their nearest collection site.

It is possible to make a donation on their website. Donating directly to Hawai’i Foodbank can guarantee that your donation will make the greatest impact possible.

The Foodbank can purchase food at one-fifth the cost of retail prices. So, for example, a donation of $25 can help provide food for more than 50 meals.
