WAIMANALO, Hawaii (KHON2) — Crews continued working on a 20-inch water main break on Kalanianaole Highway that originally happened on Friday morning. Water wagons continue servicing about 500 customers who have been left without water for three days.
A 20-inch main break on Lukanela Street behind Shima’s Supermarket is ongoing. Crews are excavating the main to assess the extent of the damage.
The City is asking neighbors to minimize water use until further notice. According to the Board of Water Supply (BWS), area reservoirs cannot be refilled until the transmission main is repaired.
“Having to fill up all our tanks for toileting, washing dishes. We try not to cook so much because the water situation,” stated Helen Villena, Waimanalo resident. “We’re going to go to Mililani and wash them clothes because it’s overfilled.”
BWS said water wagons have been placed in the following locations to help 500 impacted customers:
- 41-462 Moole Street
- 41-552 Moole Street
- 41-714 Inoaole Street
- 41-541 Hihimanu Street
“As soon as they see water coming out, everybody comes out with their coolers, put it right in the front yard and everybody’s ready to fill out,” said Villena.
Some customers may even experience lower than normal water pressures, per BWS.
“I keep saying that I’d rather live without electricity than water,” stated Lucille Ranit, Waimanalo resident. “At least we can use flashlights, but water, you can never live without water.”
