HAWAII, Hawaii (KHON2) — Big Island police are investigating a possible drowning that occurred on the afternoon of Feb. 21 at a South Kohala beach park that resulted in the death of an 81-year-old Waimea man.
Police and fire personnel responded to Hapuna Beach at 3:45 p.m., where a witness told officials that the 81-year-old was seen motionless in the water offshore.
A lifeguard was able to pull the man onto the shore and began lifesaving measures until the man was transported to Queen’s North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
An investigation will be held to determine the man’s exact cause of death. At this time, foul play is not suspected.
