HONOLULU (KHON2) — Waikiki experienced a miracle last week when Hawaiian monk seal, Kaiwi, gave birth to a pup on May 1.

This is the third pup that Kaiwi has birthed at Kaimana Beach.

The pair have been seen swimming, sleeping and enjoying the space that has been afforded them by the ropes surrounding the beach area.

Kaiwi is expected to spend the next several weeks nursing her pup and teaching it how to fish, after which she will wean the pup.

As has been done in past years, we expect that the pup will then be relocated to an undisclosed beach where it can be free from onlookers as it starts its solo wild journey.
