HONOLULU (KHON2) — This is Weekend Roundup, your go-to destination for weekend planning in the islands. For this weekend of Aug. 2 and Aug. 3, there are a bunch of fun events for everybody to enjoy across the islands.
Here’s everything you need to have a fantastic weekend:
August 2
Oʻahu
The Unthirsty Plant Sale will be taking place at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden. The sale will feature drought-resistant plants, which are perfect for your lanai, yard or window!
The event promotes beautification of your hale while also highlighting plants that can survive off of little water.
Admission is free to the three-acre garden, which will be filled with an abundance of unique plants.
The sale, which is organized by the Board of Water Supply, runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Over at Honolulu Hale, the civic grounds will be adorned with Korean culture, as the 21st annual Korean Festival will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
At the festival, there will be a bunch of Korean food, vendors and nonstop performances and live entertainment.
For those looking to make it big, a subsidiary of major K-pop company HYBE will be in attendance, looking for Hawaiʻi’s next K-pop star, following the success of Honolulu-born and raised Megan Skiendel, who made her debut in HYBE’s group KATSEYE.
The event — and its parking — is free.
Over at Wet ‘n’ Wild, they are giving away some of this year’s hottest commodities: Labubus.
The waterpark will be having a Labubu day, which features giveaways, photo opportunities, clothes vendors and more.
Starting at 11:30 a.m., the waterpark will be giving out Labubus every 10 minutes. There will also be a life-size labubu to take photos with until 1:30 p.m., as well as a vendor selling clothes for your new fuzzy friend.
Hawaiʻi Island
The Kahilu Theater in Waimea will have a Broadway in Hawaiʻi night, with a show at 7 p.m.
The show will reunite original members of the Kahilu Youth Troupe, who are all now professional theatre performers across the world.
The Broadway concert will feature numbers from previous productions by the troupe — including “Godspell,” “Grease,” “West Side Story” and more Broadway hits.
Tickets start at $26 and can be purchased online.
Maui
The Lahaina Cannery will be hosting their annual Keiki Hula Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The free, family-friendly event will feature a bunch of different hula performances by talented keiki.
In addition to the live entertainment, there will also be lei making, coconut weaving and more — all for keiki to participate in hands-on activities and have some souvenirs to take home.
On top of the fun activities, the festival will be complete with local businesses selling ono foods, drinks and local crafts.
Kauaʻi
The Heiva I Kauaʻi celebration will be happening at the Kapaʻa Beach Park.
This year marks the 23rd anniversary of the Tahitian cultural celebration, with some of the best dancers from across the Pacific and the rest of the world competing against each other.
The competition will also have vendors selling goods, jewelry and clothing from Tahiti and around the Pacific.
There will also be a variety of global foods and live Polynesian craft demonstrations.
Heiva I Kauaʻi will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday — but if you can’t make it that day, no worries! The competition will continue into Sunday, also from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
August 3
Oʻahu
The 84th annual Nā Hula Festival will be taking place at Kapiʻolani Park.
The hula fest will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park’s bandstand, and feature live music from the Royal Hawaiian Band, hula performances and more.
Admission to the festival is free, with this festival being the longest-running non-competitive hula event.
At the Blaisdell, there is the last day of the Hawaiʻi Tattoo Expo, which runs from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Attendees can get tattooed by some of the best artists around, while enjoying live cultural entertainment and more.
