HONOLULU (KHON2) — In Honolulu, if you’ve driven down Pensacola or King streets this week, then you’ve probably been stuck in some pretty bad traffic.
Cars have been crawling along, and many drivers have said the long waits are wearing on their patience.
Some people have even changed their usual routes to try and save time, but delays have been hard to avoid with so many people looking at the same alternate routes.
There hasn’t been much information about what’s going on or how long it will last. So, KHON2 reached out to the City and County of Honolulu to get some answers about the situation and find out when things might return to normal.
This is what we were told.
“Some of the ongoing work along Pensacola Street is connected to the King Street rehabilitation project and includes the staging of construction vehicles and equipment in the area,” said a spokesperson for the city.
Frustrations have been running high with delayed traffic impacting work and school commutes. But there is some good news on the horizon.
“We understand the frustration these impacts can cause and sincerely appreciate everyone’s patience as the work progresses,” said the spokesperson. “The good news is that construction is currently ahead of schedule and is anticipated to be completed before December.”
While the traffic has been difficult, city officials say the work will lead to smoother and safer roads once finished.
Until then, they’re asking drivers to stay patient, plan for extra time and drive carefully through the construction zones.
While the construction is happening, remember that safety is still the most important thing drivers on Oahu can embrace.
