HONOLULU (KHON2) — Witnessing — or worse, being involved in — a hit-and-run traffic collision can be extremely daunting, but the Honolulu Police Department wants the public to know what they can do if such a situation occurs.
According to Major James Slayter of HPD’s Traffic Division, one of the best things you can do is call 911 immediately and cooperate with officials.
“Anytime you witness any type of a collision where one of the vehicles flees, we really rely on the community’s support,” he said. “You can call 911, stay at the scene, be a good witness [and] help us out.”
In addition, whether you are the victim or a witness, Slayter says a dashcam can come in handy, as surveillance footage is extremely critical in these types of investigation.
Witnesses at the scene that are willing to come forward to authorities, provide statements and help identify the driver or vehicle can leave a major impact on the case.
The same goes for drivers as well — and while being involved in a collision can be extremely overwhelming, staying calm and remembering any identifying information is paramount, Slayter said.
Take notes on any information that can help the case, such as any stickers on the vehicle, characteristics like scratches or damage on the vehicle or anything about the driver.
When in doubt, Slayter says the best thing you can do is immediately call 911 to get police en route to you as soon as possible.
